Garden Calendar – Week of Mar. 16

From Lisa Johnson, Dane County UW-Extension horticulture educator:

“Fruit: Long-term predictions for 2014 spring weather are indicating a cooler than normal spring, so you can stretch out your pruning tasks a little. Grapes can be pruned starting around mid-March. Depending on whether you are growing American grapes or European or French hybrids you will need to use either the cane pruning or spur pruning system.

Now is a also a good time to evaluate your trellis system and make any repairs or additions that may be needed. Visit http://learningstore.uwex.edu/Fruit-C78.aspx to see the publication “Growing Grapes in Wisconsin.” Scroll down to the gold box that says “View the pdf” to view the document. Apple, pear and other fruit trees should also be pruned while still dormant, and it appears that we will not have to rush to get these tasks done this spring!”

We like to feature outdoor project videos with the weekly Garden Calendar. This week, follow the professionals from Chris Foss Contractor as they show the design, pouring and stamping of a beautiful Ashlar Slate concrete patio in this segment from the Today’s Home Remodeler TV series.
