Home Security 101

New homeowners often ask, “What steps should I take to make my home secure?” Here are some tips that can help you conduct your home security review:

Outside Appearance – The initial impression of your home often determines if it is burglarized. You want your house to appear active: Make sure the grass is mowed and the walks are shoveled. Your mail and newspapers should be collected even while you’re on vacation. You don’t want your grounds or shrubbery to be able to hide intruders and all tools and ladders should be kept indoors or secured. Also, light timers make a great investment to give your house that “lived in” look.

Perimeter Security – Crime can occur at any time, however many burglaries occur between 11:00 am and 3:00 pm. Every door should have a deadbolt lock. If you’re moving into that new “dream home” make sure to re-key all the locks as you can’t be certain who might have a key. Vulnerable windows should have secondary locks or pins to provide extra security.

Interior Security – The best security measures use multiple levels of prevention, therefore electronic security makes an excellent investment to protect your home. You can install burglar alarm system sensors on all doors and vulnerable windows and interior motion sensors to protect your valuables within the home. These will provide detection measures should someone decide to intrude. And adding adequate smoke and carbon monoxide detectors is the best way of saving family members from those silent killers.

Response – When was the last time you had a fire drill in your home? Apart from prevention, your response to any emergency situation is the key element to your family’s security and safety. Pre-planned, well thought out action can prevent loss and tragedy. Monitored electronic security can dispatch police, fire or emergency medical responders to your home at a moment’s notice. By following these tips and precautionary measures, you’ll become much more likely to avoid loss or tragedy in your home.
