Salt pollution aids some invasive species, damages infrastructure, causes soil problems and pollutes our drinking water sources which is concerning for those with heart or kidney conditions. Efforts to reduce salt pollution are gaining traction as many municipalities are now using brine to pre-treat roads which can reduce salt usage by up to 70%. In this video from Today’s Home Remodeler TV, we show how being salt wise with your water softener can also make a big impact in reducing salt pollution. Host Stuart Keith starts at the Madison Metropolitan Sewerage District Treatment Plant with Kathy Lake to learn about their treatment process. We’ll see how too much salt is entering the facility through wastewater coming from water softeners and the environmental impact it has on freshwater ecosystems. Then we’ll visit the Plumbers Local 75 Training Center for some solutions with instructor Bob Lanphear who shows how water softeners work, ways to reduce salt usage and when they should be replaced.
