Many times when planning the design of their new home, people
want to start sketching. Instead, figure out your “wish list.” Determine
what you need, what you want and what would be nice to have.
Then leave the sketching to the architect, designer or builder.
Be specific about what you want and explain your current living situation
to help relate size. “We want a large walk-in closet” can be more clearly
communicated when the size of your current closet is understood by
your designer.
Create a home building reference folder and include the following:
All your rough sketches of the building site.
Attend your local Parade of Homes and/or try to walk through open
houses at new homes. Take notes and get info about anything you
see that you would like to incorporate in your new home.
Include pictures, plans and any ideas you like from home magazines.
You’ll want to work with someone who is design oriented. An architect
or designer should be focused on your design and your communication
comfort level must be excellent. Your builder is focused on the construction
of your design ideas. If you separate design and construction, the
expectations of all parties involved will be more clearly understood.
