Image

One of the things that we all take for granted is the luxury of going to the kitchen sink and getting a nice cold glass of water to drink. Unfortunately, what appears clean and pure may not always be the case whether you’re on a private well or being supplied by the city.

If you have a private well system, you should consider testing you’re well water annually, when the system is modified or repaired or whenever there is a change in appearance, taste, odor or flow and most importantly, prior to having a baby. Infants are much more susceptible to the dangers of contaminated drinking water and common sense along with along with testing can minimize these concerns. Contamination can occur for many reasons but typically insufficient well depth and substandard construction cause most of the problems. If you own a home with an older well, you should heighten your awareness to the potential for contamination as deteriorated well linings can let unfiltered surface water and near surface water seep through the cracks and contaminate your well.

Some of the more common problems include bacteria contamination (coliform), high nitrates, Atrazineand the potential for lead contamination. If you have questions, general information and test kits can be obtained through your state Laboratory of Hygiene.
