Tips For A Great Garden

Spring is here and Garden Shows are happening all over. So this is a good time to repeat a guest post from Remodeler TV Blog follower Natalie Miller, who brings us these Tips For A Great Garden:

1) Make and Use Compost
Kitchen scraps are great in the garden. You can reuse your waste to supplement the soil, increasing your yield and recycling at the same time. Most types of food can be used as compost. As a general rule, though, you should avoid meat. You can even buy worms to add to your compost bin. It is also a good way to go about recycling and make use of otherwise useless food scraps.

2) Plant in an Accessible Way
For most people this will be raised beds. You want to have access to your plants, and be able to weed, water, and fertilize. You need paths that can be walked on. You need to be able to use your garden space. If you can’t get to your crops, how will you harvest them?

3) Use Mulch
Mulch keeps the temperature of the soil in check, conserves water, keeps soil-borne diseases at bay and also keeps soil from getting on your plants (like lettuce). It also makes weeding less of a chore. There are many types of mulch to choose from, depending on your taste. Dry out as much as you can, make use of the grass cutting to the maximum.

4) Water Regularly
Water often, but not on a schedule. Your garden’s needs will vary based on weather patterns and the amount of sun it is getting, as well as the needs of individual plants. Do your research and check the soil. Lawn care requires a lot of watering and regular one at that.

5) Fertilize
Whether it’s spraying or granules, you’ll want to use some type of fertilizer unless you are going organic. It is another good idea for lawn care and be sure to make use of it to the maximum of your ability.

6) Weed Control
You’ll want to make sure your plants aren’t competing with weeds for nutrients in the soil. That means you’ll have to be weeding regularly. But if you followed number three and used mulch, you’ll have less work to do. Read up on weeds and make sure you are doing the right job.
