What You Should Know About House Paints And Painting – Part 2

The primary function of paint is to protect the surface. While we think of paint as decorative, without it wood would deteriorate, crack and rot. Paint provides a protective film over the wood to shield it from the effects of sunlight and moisture.

The Primer has several functions. It creates a sealed and proper surface for maximum adhesion of the finish coats. It also helps block staining from water soluble dyes in the wood. Most manufacturers recommend oil-base type primer under both oil and latex house paints. Primer should always be used on bare wood. Hard or glossy surfaces should be sanded and primed for the top coats to adhere properly. Nail heads which might rust should be spot primed. House paint primers should be top coated within 6 weeks of application as they are not weather resistant and can lose their seal.

Before painting, read the label on the can for guidance in surface preparation and application. If the directions call for 450 sq ft per gallon coverage, estimate that area on your siding and apply the paint so that one gallon is used to cover that area. This insures that the proper thickness of film is being applied. Whether using a brush, roller or sprayer, remember that the purpose is to apply the paint evenly at the right thickness. Avoid cheap applicators as you can’t get a good paint job with a poor applicator.

Applying the paint correctly has a tremendous effect on the finished job. Work across the surface properly. Plan to paint only 2 or 3 boards at a time, running the full length of the boards without stopping. On horizontal siding plan to paint from one corner of the house right across to a natural stopping point, such as another corner or a door or window. By painting only 2 or 3 boards running their full length, you’ll be able to maintain a wet edge on the paint so each new brushfull can be blended back into the wet paint without double coating. Double coating occurs when the paint begins to partially dry and the next brushfull actually applies a second coat. This causes an uneven finish and a patchwork appearance will develop over time as the paint weathers. Plan to paint or stain vertical siding using the same strategy, coating as many boards as you can handle comfortably while maintaining a wet edge and working the full length of the boards top to bottom.

Remember, paint performance is affected by 5 basic factors:

    1. The nature of the surface to which the paint is applied.

    2. The preparation of the surface to hold the paint properly.

    3. The correct application of the paint.

    4. The extent of weathering exposure.

    5. The quality of the paint.

Good Luck with your painting project!!

  1. Its simple, you dont have instructions on paint labels for nothing, It is rather important to read those instructions to et the best results.

  2. I agree, the importance of paint to the wellbeing of the wood is not appreciated as much as it should be. People think of paint as something that is there to make things look good but there’s so much more to paint selection 🙂
